Anna Dallapiccola, University of Edinburgh, speaks on two different co-
existing South Indian painting traditions – the Company paintings
made for European clients in the 19th century, and the vibrantly
painted narratives used by local storytellers.
The speaker
Anna L. Dallapiccola studied at the University of Heidelberg: in 1981 she was appointed
Professor of Indian Art History at the South Asia Institute of that University. Since1993 she
has been Honorary Professor at the University of Edinburgh. Her other books include: Die
‘Paithan’ Malerei, The Sastric Traditions in Indian Arts (editor), Sculpture at Vijayanagara (co-
authored with Anila Verghese), Hindu Myths, Dictionary of Hindu Lore and Legend, and King,
Capital and Court (co-authored with CTM Kotraiah).
